The psychiatric-mental health nurse or psychiatric nurse practitioner who has advanced degrees i.e. Master’s and Doctoral degrees has many employment opportunities and they can avail the one that best meet their needs. They can work in many healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, mental health organizations, private clinics, physician’s office, etc. Some psychiatric nurse practitioners with the master’s and doctoral degrees can also get employed as researchers, professors in different schools and colleges or private consultants. The nurse practitioners also have immense opportunities in the military settings. In addition to the basic educational requirements, the psychiatric nurse practitioners need to have some additional knowledge. The nurse practitioners must be familiar with the theories of mental health and illness from both physiological and psychological perspectives. The standard requirement for most of the nurse practitioners is the knowledge about pharmacology. They should be aware about the variety of therapeutic methods as well and they must also have knowledge about the legal implications of the different psychosocial or medical interventions that are employed. Hence, any psychiatric nurse practitioner needs to work hard to equip himself/herself with the latest knowledge so that the work can be performed effectively and efficiently.
